*This is a paid partnership with The NYC Garment District

As a Native New Yorker, I love exploring different parts of the city and even though I’ve lived here all my life, I feel like there is always so much to do! I get asked frequently what neighborhood I would recommend to someone that is visiting New York and today I am going to talk about NYC Garment District because it’s an exciting time to visit, especially if you’re here during the summer!

For tourists, it’s actually pretty easy to not miss The Garment District because it’s very close to Times Square. It’s located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and is bordered by 42nd Street and 34th Street to the north and south, 5th Avenue and 9th Avenue to the east and west. You can honestly spend a whole day around this area because there is so much to do including visiting the UrbanSpace Garment District Food Market, taking photos and eating at the Garment District Urban Garden and of course spending the evening at one of the amazing rooftops bars or restaurants nearby.

If you are here for the summer, then you have to visit the UrbanSpace Garment District which is a foodie’s dream come true. There are many vendors in this food market including some of my favorites: Destination Dumplings, Melt Ice Cream Sandwiches, etc. You can check out the full list of vendors and market dates here. It’s a great way to try different foods and enjoy the sun because there is outdoor seating. Feel free to shop around as there are many retail stores and even Macy’s nearby.

If you need a break, it is the perfect time to visit the Garment Distruct Urban Garden which is located two blocks of Broadway, 36th-37th and 39th – 40th. These blocks have been blocked off, so it was made to transform the pedestrian experience. I love strolling around the plaza because there are great photo opportunities. There is even a 400 foot long art work on the road called “Ararauna,” which is something that you truly can’t miss and you can see from the photos above. The installation is part of Garment District Art on the Plaza, and it’s a great admiration by both locals and tourists.

Once you feel somewhat exhausted and want to unwind, I would highly suggest going to one of the rooftop bars to get a great view of the city during sunset and of course enjoy some drinks and bites.

My favorite rooftop bar is The Skylark, which is located on 39th street between 7th and 8th avenue. The view is amazing because you can see the Empire State Building. There are many cocktail options to choose from and it’s a beautiful way to spend the evening with your friends or family. If it ends up pouring like the day I went to visit, don’t fear because there’s an indoor lounge area where you can also enjoy your meal and have a beautiful sight of the city from the large windows.

I would also recommend going to see a Broadway show because that is a must do especially if you’re in Midtown Manhattan. My favorite show of all time is Wicked but Lion King is also a great option for those who never watched a Broadway show before. You can get discounted tickets at the TKTS booth, which is also located right near Times Square. You honestly don’t have to leave Midtown Manhattan because this is the heart of the city and is filled with many activities that people who plan to come to NYC look for. There are also many hotels around this neighborhood so if you’re looking to visit, this is an area I highly recommend looking into!

For those visiting NYC, let me know if you end up visiting the Garment District or if you have any questions! And for locals, let me know if you’ve ever done any of these activities at the Garment District!

The floor mural is hard to miss! I always love walking through markets to see the different vendors. Plus, it’s usually cheaper than sitting down at a restaurant ;P I love how NYC really makes the most of its urban space and goes beyond what’s practical to really make it an experience. // Ahh yesss I’ve seen both Wicked and The Lion King! This summer I also watched Dear Evan Hansen and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, both of which I loved. One of my favourite Broadway shows is Matilda. -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

Oh myyyyy, I am dying to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I think I will make it my goal to watch it by end of year and during the fall when all the tourists leave haha. And yes I’ve actually seen Matilda too and it’s such a fun musical!

Ahh, the Garment District! As a NYC resident for my entire life, I can easily relate to you on many levels of this post. There are so many places in the city that I am still to discover, so many restaurants on my list, and so many streets to walk down. Compared to some cities, NYC may look small, but from deep down in it’s heart, it’s still towering and booming on. I hadn’t been to the Garment District since I started taking precollege courses at FIT last year. I think when someone things of this area, they think Fashion! Which is undoubtedly true, but as you mentioned, the food in this area is great and there are so many local, trendy, and organic restaurants to be found. The pictures of you in the restaurant/bar are beautiful!

Yayyyy another fellow native New Yorker! I love hearing that because I think you would only know about The Garment District if you stumble across it, if you live/ work around it and of course if you’re a New York resident. You should definitely check it out now especially since there’s so much fun things happening in the summer there!

Mariann, such a great post! I love the garment district! And if you ever get the opportunity to shop in the wholesale stores, I highly recommend it! It is so much fun. Most of them, you do need a business license with you in order to by anything but there are a few that you do not and they just have minimum purchase amounts, some as low as $50. Or if you catch their clear out sales where they are getting rid of samples or singles, they usually open those to the public as well and you can score some pretty amazing pieces for as low as a few dollars! If you are a shopper like me, you could spend two wholes days browsing the garment district!

I’ve actually been to the wholesale markets! And yes you’re right, most of the time you do need your license but there are stores that will allow you to shop even if you don’t have it. I’m so glad to hear that you’re a shopper and love browsing at The Garment District!
