ISTANBUL TRAVEL GUIDE
If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Istanbul, this Istanbul travel guide is exactly what you need to plan the most unforgettable trip. Istanbul is one of those destinations that genuinely stopped me in my tracks and trust me, I don’t say that lightly. What makes it unlike anywhere else in the world is that it literally sits on two continents, Europe and Asia. That alone tells you how layered, complex, and completely magical this city is.
I spent four full days here (plus two extra days in Cappadocia) and visited in late September, which was the most perfect timing (warm weather, golden light, and just the right amount of crowds). I planned a mix of adventure, culture, exploration, and relaxation and I’m so glad I did because Istanbul rewards every single one of those moods.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN ISTANBUL:
Visit mosques: If you’ve seen pictures of Istanbul, then photos of mosques might come to mind. There are several must visit mosques including:
1. Visit the Süleymaniye Mosque
I arrived here around 8am and had the entire place practically to myself — and honestly, that peaceful moment set the tone for my whole trip. The Süleymaniye Mosque was designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan and is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. It took eight years to build and the moment you step inside, you feel it. There’s a calmness that just washes over you. Remember: whether you’re Muslim or not, you must remove your shoes and women need a head covering when visiting any mosque in Istanbul.
2. Visit Hagia Sofia:
The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque is one of the oldest and most awe-inspiring structures I’ve ever set foot in. It was constructed three times in the same location, and you can actually see the layers of history in the architecture. The original colored stone mosaics inside are stunning, just be prepared to be completely speechless. It is massive, so give yourself plenty of time.
3. Explore Topkapi Palace Museum:
If you love museums, culture, and history, Topkapi Palace is absolutely non-negotiable. This was the main residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans and it’s loaded with exhibition halls, four expansive courtyards, the famous harem, imperial gates, and lush outer gardens. Each space has its own distinct history and I could have spent an entire day just here.
4. See the Blue Mosque:
Also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Blue Mosque is famous for its six minarets, five main domes, and stunning marble interiors. Some people debate whether to visit this or Hagia Sophia, but my advice? Do both. They’re both special in completely different ways and you’re already there.
5. Get Lost in the Grand Bazaar
Whether you love shopping or not, the Grand Bazaar is a must. It is the largest covered bazaar in the world with 66 streets and over 4,000 shops, organized by category so you can find everything from spices to jewelry to ceramics. Fair warning: it is wonderfully chaotic and the shop owners will absolutely call for your attention. Embrace it. My favorite was Brother’s Lamp. The owner was incredibly warm and we ended up having the best conversation. Stop by if you’re there!
6. Wander Through Balat and Fener:
This is one of the most Instagrammable areas in all of Turkey and I’m not exaggerating. Balat is the former Jewish quarter of Istanbul and is full of colorful buildings, charming alleyways, tiny shops, and photo opportunities around every single corner. Fener sits right next to it and is home to beautiful historic homes and places of worship. If you love photography and content creation, you need to dedicate at least half a day here.
7. Visit Galata Tower and Walk the Galata Bridge
My Airbnb was right near Galata Tower so I got to see it every day and it never got old. The tower is one of the most iconic structures in Istanbul’s skyline and the street leading up to it is full of cafes and restaurants, perfect for people watching over coffee. Nearby, the Galata Bridge spans the Golden Horn and offers beautiful views of the city. Go early morning when it’s quiet and grab a simit along the way!
Enjoy Turkish cuisine:
8. Experience Arada Blue City
This Lebanese restaurant is located on Istanbul’s Asian side in Üsküdar and is worth the trip for the interior alone. The entire space is decorated in blue, three floors, each with a completely different vibe. The top is outdoor with a view, the second has an intimate cozy corner situation with pillows and lamps perfect for photos, and the entrance level feels like a cafe. I had a mixed grill platter with sides and it was beyond delicious. If you’re already exploring the Asian side, this is a must.
8. Dine at Seven Hills Restaurant
If you can only pick one restaurant in Istanbul, make it Seven Hills. The terrace has jaw-dropping views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia and on a good weather day, it is unreal. I came for the Turkish breakfast and it was genuinely one of the best meals of my life, a full spread of everything you could want. Make a reservation in advance and request a table closest to the outside railing so nothing blocks your view.
10. Get Your Turkish Coffee Read
I had no idea this was a thing until a friend told me about it in Istanbul and now I’m obsessed. Tasseography (Turkish coffee fortune telling) dates back to the 16th century and involves drinking your coffee, swirling the grounds, flipping the cup, and having an expert read the shapes. My reader touched on my wishes, my past, my future, and things that honestly made my jaw drop. Whether you believe in it or not, it is a completely unique and memorable experience that you can only really get here.

Bonus tips:
- Arya Lounge is the perfect rooftop sunset spot. I caught fireworks from here and the views are stunning.
- Turkish ice cream from a street vendor is a must, the performance alone is worth it, and the stretchy salep-based texture is unlike anything you’ve had before.
Where to Stay in Istanbul
Finding the right hotel in Istanbul makes a huge difference, especially since the Sultanahmet area puts you within walking distance of almost all the major landmarks. Here are my three top picks:
Seven Hills Hotel (Top Pick!)
Why it’s great: This is genuinely one of the most beautifully located hotels in Istanbul, steps from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia with a panoramic rooftop breakfast view that is absolutely unmatched. Reviewers consistently rave about the warm, personal service (staff greet guests by name!), the welcoming atmosphere, and how at home they feel. It’s the ideal base for a first-time visitor who wants to be in the heart of everything. Bonus: this is the same Seven Hills where I had that unforgettable Turkish breakfast!
📍 Tevkifhane Sk. No:8, Sultanahmet, Istanbul 🔗 [Book Here]
Hagia Sofia Mansions Istanbul, Curio Collection by Hilton
Why it’s great: Steps from the Hagia Sophia itself, this is Istanbul’s most enviably located luxury property. Reviewers describe the staff as warm and genuinely thoughtful from anniversary surprises to birthday cakes to smooth airport transfers. The traditional Ottoman-style architecture and hammam access make it feel like a true Istanbul experience, not just a hotel stay.
📍 Kabasakal Cd. No:5, Sultanahmet, Istanbul 🔗 [Book Here]
Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel
Why it’s great: Another Sultanahmet gem with an incredible location between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Guests love the spacious rooms, the generous breakfast spread, and the attentive staff. A great mid-range option that puts you right in the center of everything without breaking the bank.
📍 Ticarethane Sk. No:10, Sultanahmet, Istanbul 🔗 [Book Here]
Final Thoughts
