If you’re already dreading another gray New York winter, you’re not alone, warm-weather getaways for December travel are trending for a reason. Between the holiday chaos and the short, dark days, a few days of sun in December isn’t a luxury, it’s survival. As someone who’s spent the last few years testing out family-friendly resorts across the Caribbean (hi, if you’ve read my Turks & Caicos or Punta Cana posts, welcome back), I’ve put together my honest picks for where to go this December if you want warmth, ease, and zero stress.
Why These Are the Best Warm-Weather Getaways for December Travel
December sits right before peak holiday pricing kicks in (think: the week of Christmas through New Year’s), which means the first three weeks of the month often have better rates and fewer crowds than you’d expect. If you can travel before the 20th, you’ll usually save.
1. Turks & Caicos

I stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Turks & Caicos and it remains one of the most beautiful stretches of sand I’ve ever put my toes in. Grace Bay Beach in December is warm, calm, and blissfully uncrowded compared to spring break season.
2. Nassau, Bahamas

Atlantis Bahamas is a full production (waterslides, aquariums, a literal marine habitat under your hotel) and in December the energy is festive without the summer heat and humidity. It’s an easy nonstop flight from most East Coast cities, which matters a lot when you’re traveling solo or as a couple looking for a quick reset.
3. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Wyndham Alltra Punta Cana is one of the best value all-inclusives I’ve stayed at, the kind of place where you don’t look at a menu or a bill for four days straight. December temps hover in the low 80s, which is basically perfect.
4. St. Kitts

A quieter, less commercialized pick if you want warm weather without the resort-town feel. Basseterre has real local color, hiking up to Brimstone Hill Fortress, and beaches that don’t require a 6 a.m. lounge-chair sprint. Till this day, staying at Park Hyatt St. Kitts ranks as one of my top favorite family destinations and hotels.
5. Aruba
Consistently sunny and outside the hurricane belt, so December is actually one of the more reliable months to visit. The trade winds keep it from ever feeling oppressively hot. If you’re traveling with kids, the Hyatt Regency is my pick. The pool with waterslide and the on-site kids’ activity center mean you actually get downtime while they’re entertained.
6. Quebec City (yes, really — for a different kind of warm)
Not sun-warm, but December in Quebec City is genuinely magical: cobblestone streets, ice skating, and Christmas markets that feel plucked from Europe without the transatlantic flight. If “warm” for you means warm feeling rather than warm weather, this is my wildcard pick. For the full fairy-tale effect, stay at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, it sits right on top of the Christmas Market, so you can walk out the door straight into the twinkle lights.
7. Riviera Maya, Mexico
KAN Tulum-style boutique stays have been having a moment, and December is arguably the best month to go: post-hurricane season, pre-spring-break crowds, and water that’s calm enough for snorkeling most days.
Quick Tips for Booking Warm-Weather Getaways for December Travel
- Book before December 15th for the best pricing before holiday-week surges
- Direct flights matter more in December (connections have higher delay risk during peak holiday air traffic)
- Pack one dressy outfit; several of these resorts do NYE or holiday-themed dinners even in early December
