Upswing Health: Free Home Exercises for MSK Issues

If you know me, then you know that I am a huge advocate for wellness, fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. I have always been an active individual, going back to my high school dance background. Injuries are common, especially if you are someone who exercises and moves frequently. I have chronic Achilles tendonitis, which is a common condition among athletes and “occurs when the large tendon that runs down the back of your lower leg becomes irritated and inflamed either due to an acute injury or, more commonly, with overuse.”

Achilles tendonitis is also considered a musculoskeletal (MSK) issue. Prior to being sheltered at home, I would go to physical therapy to treat my condition. However, many MSK issues can be treated at home with a series of guided exercises, without having to see a doctor. Since we are currently advised to stay at home, I am happy that I discovered Upswing Health. Upswing is a national telemedicine service that allows you to talk to a sports medicine doctor for free. The easy-to-use online technology can guide you to figuring out what hurts and connects you to a live medical professional without leaving your home!

I love that the website offers a “symptom checker” which brings you to a visual screen of a body diagram. You can choose which location of your body that you find your injury resides in and the “what hurts” feature can also be categorized by body part or by sport. There will also be some questions, which results in a report that provides advice on the potential possibilities of the condition. From there, you can chat with an Upswing athletic trainer or check the forum and speak with others who may have the same issues. Upswing Health is powered by AI and medical experts, which makes identifying your injury more reliable than going through an endless internet search.

My workout routine has remained the same, so I am still working out everyday from home. Since I am not walking as much, I do find that I am not overusing my ankle as I did previously. However, when my Achilles tendonitis does flare up, I feel better knowing that I can connect with a certified trainer to walk me through exercises that alleviate my pain. I incorporate the exercises before and after my training. I definitely find that it helps to prevent my ankle from hurting and my main focus is prevention, rather than treatment. The recommended exercises are also similar to the ones that were recommended by my physical therapist.

I am extremely satisfied knowing that Upswing Health is there for me, since its main mission is to help active people, regardless of level, age or ability to prevent and recover from injuries that might slow them down. If you are experiencing any musculoskeletal issues or know someone who is dealing with an injury, I highly recommend visiting Upswing Health to learn more about their free telemedicine services for MSK conditions. Just because we can’t leave home, doesn’t mean that you can’t still connect with a certified athletic trainer and be proactive during this time!
