Postpartum must haves

items that helped my recovery after birth

Pregnancy in it itself is a journey. But it’s easy to forget that your body also goes through a lot during birth. I had a vaginal birth and I realized it’s important to rest and heal afterwards. These are my postpartum must haves, which have made my recovery smoother.

POSTPARTUM MUST HAVES

  • Frida postpartum kit: I am all for a bundle package and this postpartum kit is heaven. It comes with disposable Postpartum Underwear, Instant Ice Maxi Pads, Perineal Cooling Pad Liners, and Perineal Healing Foam. This is perfect to get you through the first week or so after birth. My hospital actually provided something similar so it’s not necessary to bring it with you to the hospital, but definitely have this when you get discharged.
  • Disposable underwear: I have to admit I was wearing disposable underwear for 6 weeks. The first 3 weeks were crucial since I was bleeding, but they became so convenient and comfortable that I just continued to wear them even after. The Frida kit comes with only 4 disposable underwear so I highly recommend getting more like these discreet ones. The best part is that if you have any remaining, you can just wear them on your menstrual cycle as it serves a similar purpose.
  • Dermoplast: It is common to feel a burning sensation down there after birth when you use the bathroom. This spray provides soothing relief to tender areas and provides fast relief of pain while it cools and moisturizes. You can also use this for minor cuts, sunburns, insect bites, etc. Trust me, you will feel 100% better afterwards!
  • T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Hemorrhoidal Pads with Aloe: Another not so pleasant result of giving birth is possible hemorrhoids. These pads are saturated with all-natural clinical grade witch hazel and aloe vera – two of nature’s most powerful healing botanicals – to cool and soothe inflamed tissue. Similar to Dermoplast, this will make going to the bathroom easier.
  • Peri bottle: Most hospitals will provide a peri bottle, which helps to keep your perineum clean after giving birth. It works by gently streaming water at the perineal region during urination and/or after using the bathroom. The style that worked for me was the upside- down from Frida. It is also portable so you can take on the go.

I kept all of these postpartum must haves in a small basket in my bathroom. It made it easier for me to have everything in one place. After a month or so, you won’t be needing to use these items, but these are essential during the first month!

What a great helpful, informative and honest post. I think a lot of people shy away from speaking about this aspect of giving birth. I am sure this is going to be helpful to many!

I definitely see and hear a lot about baby registry but not enough about postpartum recovery so I wanted to normalize that!

Thank you Kathrine! I personally didn’t think about postpartum recovery until I experienced it myself so I definitely wanted to write a post about it.
