BYE BYE SUMMER HAIR

As we are gearing up towards the fall, it’s important to transition our haircare accordingly to the different seasons. I always switch up my skincare routines depending on the weather but I never thought to do the same for haircare. If you actually think about it, we are out in the sun a lot during the summer, which actually exposes our hair to more damage. Fall is the perfect time to correct hair and skin damage from the sun and I have some great tips from NYC/Miami Hair Stylist, Lucy Garcia Planck on how to do that.

Hair Masks that can help with dry hair from summer damageAvocado has fatty acids that make hair soft. It’s great to make a paste with avocado and coconut oil. Put in 2 teaspoons of avocado (mashed) or in a blender and 1 tsp of coconut oil. Blend the two together for a few seconds or until smooth. You can even warm up the paste a little bit and leave it in your hair for approximately 30-60 minutes. Start at the top of your roots and work your way down. You can also use aloe vera from a real plant. Using the same ratio of above, mixing the aloe vera with the coconut oil.”

I often buy hair masks, but it’s great to know that you can do it yourself at home. I’ve read tons of articles on the benefits and different usages for coconut oil and it’s no surprise that this is a key element in hair masks. I would advise to incorporate this into your self care Sunday routine or have fun and do it in a night in with your roommates/ friends!

Another great way to maintain shiny, healthy hair throughout the fall is to take a Biotin supplement. According to Planck “Biotin is a natural supplement that many people don’t get enough of and that could be a contributing factor to dry, brittle hair.” I’m sure many of you can relate because I personally have a drier scalp and hair in the winter and more oilier hair in the summer, similarly to my skin. I do take Biotin and I’m a huge advocate for them because I’ve seen benefits in my hair health since I’ve incorporated them into my daily routine. Planck recommends using Vitafusion Gorgeous Hair, Skin and Nails, a great-tasting gummy multivitamin containing 12 key nutrients, including Biotin and Vitamins C and E to help nourish beautiful hair, skin, and nails from the inside out.

When it comes to washing our hair, it’s important to know that it really depends on what type of hair you have but often cooler months call for less washing. I don’t know about you but I sweat a lot during the summer and I find that I have to not only shower more, but wash my hair more as well. For people with medium hair like me, it’s recommended to wash your hair every two days and for those with thicker and curlier hair, you can try to go a week in between washes but again, this all depends on your hair type and where you live.

Ultimately, you should be taking care of your hair all year round just like you would to your skin and body. If you start to incorporate hair masks and take a Biotin supplement, then you are already on the right path to keeping your hair as healthy as it could be!
