5 Magical Holiday Activities to Do in NYC With Kids

Family-friendly holiday fun in New York City you won’t want to miss

by mariann.yip@gmail.com

The holidays in New York City truly feel like magic — sparkling lights, festive window displays, and endless activities perfect for families. Whether you’re visiting or living here, there are so many memorable holiday activities to do in NYC with kids. Below are five can’t-miss experiences that bring the season to life.

1. Visit FAO Schwarz & the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

No holiday season is complete without a visit to the iconic FAO Schwarz. Kids can explore giant plush toys, play with interactive displays, and of course jump on the famous Big Piano. After shopping and playing, walk right outside to the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree — one of the most magical sights in NYC. Between the lights, decorations, and ice skating rink, your kids will feel like they’re in a holiday movie.

2. Experience Macy’s Santaland

A true NYC classic, Macy’s Santaland brings the North Pole to life. From twinkling lights to animatronic reindeer and a magical train ride, the entire experience is designed to enchant children of all ages. The highlight, of course, is meeting Santa himself. Reservations are required, so book early — this is one of the most popular holiday activities to do in NYC with kids.

3. Explore the Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights

The Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is a dazzling outdoor light festival filled with lantern animals, musical performances, ice-carving demos, and hot chocolate stands. It’s stroller-friendly and perfect for little ones who love animals and bright, colorful displays. This one is great for nighttime family fun without being overwhelming.

4. Ride the Holiday Train Show at New York Botanical Garden

The NYBG Holiday Train Show is a favorite among NYC families. Kids can watch miniature trains zip through a tiny world made entirely of natural materials — tree bark, leaves, acorns, and branches — while iconic NYC landmarks glow from within. The exhibition is indoors, making it a cozy option on cold winter days.

5. Go Ice Skating at Bryant Park Winter Village

Bryant Park’s Winter Village features one of the city’s most kid-friendly rinks, plus holiday shops and yummy treats like churros and hot cocoa. Skating here feels festive but less hectic than Rockefeller Center. You can also rent a cozy igloo or grab lunch at The Lodge for a complete winter day out.

Final Thoughts

From iconic stores to zoo lights and ice-skating adventures, there are endless holiday activities to do in NYC with kids. Whether you check off one or all five, these experiences create memories your family will talk about long after the holidays are over.

All of these would be amazing to visit I think even without kiddos (I only have a precious cat for now, haha), but I bet it would be so much more magical with kids! Seeing the Rockefeller Center would be so neat!
